Government and States react to the end of Civic-Military Schools; listen to podcast

The Lula government’s announcement that the National Program of Civic-Military Schools (Pecim) will be closed at the end of 2023 fell like a bomb in Brasília (DF) and in several states of the country. The measure was not exactly a surprise, since it represented one of the main flags of the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), but it has been criticized and has already been called a “revanchist decision” by the former vice president and current senator Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS), who spoke at the Senate Plenary Session.
Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) also took the floor and accused the PT government of using ideology to harm Education. The leader of the government in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), said that despite being discontinued, the initiative is not prohibited.
Among the governors there is also noise. Several states have already announced that they will maintain or at least evaluate the possibility of maintaining the program even without federal support. São Paulo is on this list.
Through social networks, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) said: “I was a student at Colégio Militar and I know the importance of quality education and how the school needs to convey correct values to our young people”.
