Bolsonaro’s former minister cries for prisoners of the 8/1 in the Senate – 07/13/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

STF (Supreme Federal Court) Minister Luís Roberto Barroso became one of the preferred targets of the public hearing held in the Senate this Thursday (13) to discuss the arrest of those involved in the anti-democratic attacks of January 8.

Requested by senators Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) and Jorge Seif (PL-SC), the meeting brings together, this afternoon, names of Bolsonarism such as Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), Hamilton Mourão (Republicans-RS) and Damares Alves (Republicans -DF). During their opening speeches, some of the senators cited and rejected Barroso’s speech made during the 59th Congress of the UNE (National Union of Students).

“We defeated censorship, we defeated torture, we defeated Bolsonarism to allow democracy and the free manifestation of all people”, said the magistrate, on Wednesday (12).

After the impact of the minister’s participation in the congress, the STF issued a note stating that Barroso was referring to the popular vote when he mentioned Bolsonarism in a speech to students.

For senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), however, the court’s clarification would have aggravated the situation.

“The worst thing was not the speech, it was the note that was issued to justify the speech. In the note, it is said that individual or personal action cannot be confused with institutional action. Well, who guards the Brazilian Constitution [como Barroso, na condição de ministro] attacks it, in the sense that the judiciary cannot have party-political action”, said the former minister of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

“It is necessary that there be a retraction from the Minister of the STF. And, when there is, he cannot remain impassive. We cannot accept this passively. We cannot think that things are normal”, he also said.

As he began his speech at the hearing, Marinho cried and had to be comforted by Senator Magno Malta (PL-ES) and his father, former Senator Valério Djalma Cavalcanti Marinho, who was with him at the hearing. His commotion, he said, was due to the situation of all those who are still imprisoned because of the 8th of January.

Before him, Senator Damares Alves had already been moved by the speech by lawyer Carolina Siebra, who represents the defenders of those prosecuted for the coup acts. The parliamentarian even broke protocol and went to the chair of the hearing to hug the lawyer.

In the column, Damares says that he did not find out about Barroso’s speech, but endorsed the criticism of the magistrate. “If he spoke, he is admitting the political activism of the STF.”

An early ally of Jair Bolsonaro, Malta even suggested that the STF minister would have a “loose” tongue. “We are obliged to hear that the STF is now the political power in Brazil. ‘Lost, mané’, ‘we defeated Bolsonarism'”, said the senator, reproducing phrases previously said by Barroso.

“A minister [que] it has no measure, it has no language lock, it even violates its own codes. The day is tough for us in every way,” she added.

This Thursday’s hearing includes the participation of members of the Association of Relatives and Victims of January 8th. Senator Eduardo Girão apologized to them for the delay in holding the meeting in the Senate and lamented the situation of those who are still being held. “Also… They have their arms crossed”, complained one of the family members, in a raised voice.
