Google and Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) denied having any involvement with the release of a Telegram article, distributed this Tuesday (9). In the text, Telegram points to the risk of censorship of users of social networks if Bill 2630, known as “PL das Fake News”, is approved.

After explaining why it considers that “democracy is under attack in Brazil”, Telegram mentions the two companies. “That’s why Google, Meta [proprietária do Facebook, Instagram e WhatsApp] and others have joined together to show the Brazilian National Congress why the bill needs to be rewritten – but this will not be possible without your help”, says the Telegram text.

Google has stated that it has been quoted without authorization and that it does not recognize the content. Meta also denied any involvement with the development of the text. “Meta refutes Telegram’s use of its name in said message, and denies the allegations in the text.”

In the statement, Telegram states that if approved, the Fake News PL could make it impossible for companies like Telegram to stay in Brazil, suggesting that the measure could also remove the operation of its main competitor, WhatsApp, in the country.
