Upon taking office, the new PGR exalts harmony between powers and respect for human dignity

Brasilia DF) – Upon taking office this Monday (18), the new Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, said that the role of the Public Ministry is technical and does not seek the spotlight. He praised harmony between powers and respect for human dignity and individual guarantees.

“In our technical action, we do not seek a stage or spotlight, but with fearlessness we must be faithful and complete in what the constituents have delegated to us”,

said Gonet, referring to the rules of the Constitution that govern the MP’s actions.

According to Gonet, the institution is experiencing a “crucial moment” in history, being “co-responsible for preserving democracy” and republican balance. Gonet stressed that it is not up to the MP to formulate public policies, but to ensure the proper functioning of policies approved by elected representatives.

“Harmony between the Powers, based on the respect owed by each of them to their own and others’ high missions, is a prerequisite for the fruitful and resolute functioning of the Democratic State of Law itself. The Public Prosecutor’s Office must adhere to this and that is what it is responsible for providing”,

declared the PGR.

In his speech, he also highlighted the prosecutor’s “unwavering” commitment to combating corruption and criminal organizations, but highlighted that even criminals have fundamental rights.

“We will have to be the first to show our commitment to the rights and dignity of everyone, even the most reprehensible criminal, always submitting to the constitutional guarantees of those around us”,

he stated.

Gonet is the tenth Attorney General of the Republic to be appointed to take office since redemocratization, in addition to three interim attorneys. He replaces interim attorney general Elizeta Ramos, who spent 75 days in office.

The inauguration takes place after he was nominated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the nomination was approved by the Senate, with a score of 65 votes in favor and 11 against, in addition to one abstention.
