Gonet courted Pazuello after Gilmar denounced the genocide – 11/23/2023 – Frederico Vasconcelos

The extensive manifestation of Coalition in Defense of Democracy against the nomination of Paulo Gonet for the position of Attorney General of the Republic — with the announced support of STF ministers Gilmar Mendes and Alexandre Moraes — mentions “the deleterious effects” and the “missing and deficient” performance of Augusto Aras, ex-PGR.

Aras did not hold former president Jair Bolsonaro responsible for the conduct of federal health policy during the Covid-19 pandemic. He did not interfere in the disastrous management of General Eduardo Pazuello at the Ministry of Health. Pazuello is a federal deputy (PL-RJ).

On February 3, 2020, Gonet, then general director of ESMPU (Higher School of the Public Ministry of the Union), invited Pazuello to the virtual seminar “The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the right to early treatment: limits and possibilities“. There were 16 thousand subscribers.

Months earlier, in an interview with UOL, Gilmar Mendes referred to the Bolsonaro government’s health policy as follows: “The Constitution does not allow the president to adopt genocidal policies. Policies that affect the lives of the population in a crucial, global way. It seems to me that You need to think a lot in this context.”

At the seminar, Pazuello made clear the limitations on the topic. He praised his performance in the Military Public Ministry. “I have always sided with him, in the most complicated moments, with complicated organizations, inside and outside the Army.” He made the presentation supported by a video about the department’s activities.

The general was greeted by Gonet as “our dear minister”, whom he “thanked immensely for his openness to the debate”.

Gonet defined the event at ESMPU as an attempt to integrate the efforts of the Public Ministry with State Powers.

You must have forgotten that five deputy attorneys general formally asked Aras to recommend that Bolsonaro avoid demonstrations against the Ministry of Health’s policy in combating the coronavirus.

Aras filed the request. He spared Bolsonaro and criticized the prosecutors.

In the document, the deputy attorneys dealt with Bolsonaro’s statement, on national television, when he criticized the closure of schools and businesses, “transmitting to the Brazilian population signs of disauthorization of the ongoing health measures, adopted and encouraged by the Federal Public Power itself”.

Here is a summary of the former PGR’s allegations:

“At this time when the country is going through a state of public calamity, the Brazilian Public Ministry is required to stay away from internal and external partisan disputes, without impeding the actions of the competent bodies in fulfilling their duties, so that we all win the coronavirus.”

Weeks after Gilmar’s speech, the then president of AJD (Judges for Democracy Association), Labor Judge Valdete Souto Severo, wrote an article under the title “Why is it possible to talk about Genocidal Policy in Brazil in 2020?

Here are excerpts from the publication:

Recently, Minister Gilmar Mendes’ speech, referring to the alleged responsibility of the military for the genocidal policy currently practiced in Brazil, caused controversy. The issue was the use of the word, which evokes traumatic and terrifying historical experiences, such as that experienced during the Holocaust.

(…)

And if there is still doubt about the possibility of qualifying the current policy as genocidal, it is enough to know that the Ministry of Health, which has no minister and is being managed by a military man, spent less than a third of the R$ 39.3 billion released for the fight against coronavirus through provisional measures.

General Eduardo Pazuello admitted this at a public hearing of the joint commission created to monitor the federal government’s actions in combating Covid-19, at the end of June. According to him, R$10.9 billion were spent (27.2% of the amount made available).

Valdete’s text was published on the website “Democracy and the World of Work in Debate”.

With the certainty of impunity, Pazuello, after leaving the Ministry of Health, participated in a political-electoral event on a platform, alongside Bolsonaro. Both without anti-Covid masks.
