Giving Aras a new mandate is to cover up armoring Bolsonaro – 07/18/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

To get the job for the first time, Augusto Aras winked at Jair Bolsonaro. The candidate for command of the PGR circumvented the election for the traditional triple list and shaped a candidacy that pleased the president. He defined his profile as conservative, defended alignment with the government’s agenda and said that actions to protect the environment “cannot be radicalized”.

It was “love at first sight”, as Bolsonaro said. And it was just the beginning. Sitting in the chair, Aras offered an attorney general who did not bother and, in moments of crisis, helped to deflect some shots fired along the way. He was reappointed to office without hiding this alliance.

With the second term nearing the end, Aras returned to campaign mode. In a rendering of accounts tailored for a new audience, the attorney general exposes his fingerprints at the Lava Jato burial, advertises the work of the Public Ministry in the Amazon and, without blushing, swears that the body did not hesitate to investigate Bolsonaro.

There are three possible motivations for the effort: he is just trying to clean up his own bar before retiring, he nods to Lula’s side to influence the choice of successor, or he does a pirouette to convince the PT candidate to nominate him for a new term.

More people take the third hypothesis seriously than proxy marketing allows. The centrão wants the reappointment because Aras reduced the temperature of investigations against politicians. PT cardinals follow a similar path, with the argument that the head of the PGR faced the abuses of Lava Jato.

Aras could just be an uncompromising guardian of the right of defense, guaranteeing a tireless fight against the excesses of the Public Ministry and even promising collective protection to the political class, but it is impossible to ignore the complete package. A third term would be a reward for the armor offered to Bolsonaro by a management that even questioned the effectiveness of masks during the pandemic and described coup trials as democratic parties.
