The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes stated this Monday (13) that organized crime “found ways to find its way into Brazilian society”. The statement came after the meeting between advisors from the Ministry of Justice and the wife of a Comando Vermelho (CV) leader became public.

Earlier, the Estadão revealed that Luciane Barbosa Farias, known as the “Amazonian drug lady”, was received twice this year by advisors of Minister Flávio Dino, at the Ministry of Justice and Public Security building, in Brasília.

“I don’t have data to make a judgment on this. [encontro no Ministério da Justiça]. We have to worry about the issue of organized crime as such. Somehow, he found ways and means to situate himself in Brazilian society. There has been a lot of talk, for example, about the mix between organized crime and politics”, the minister told journalists after participating in an event promoted by the Estadão.

Gilmar Mendes argued that it is necessary to “address the issue with the seriousness it deserves”. Luciane’s husband, Clemilson dos Santos Farias, known as Tio Patinhas, was number one on the Amazonas government’s wanted list until he was arrested in December last year. They have been married for 11 years and were convicted in the second instance of money laundering, association for drug trafficking and criminal organization.

The department’s Secretary of Legislative Affairs, Elias Vaz, apologized for scheduling the meeting with Luciane Barbosa. Dino stated that he was not informed about the meeting held by his advisors from the Legislative Affairs and Penal Policies secretariats with the wife of a CV leader. Senators and deputies opposing the government are asking the minister to provide clarification on the case and should present yet another request for impeachment against him.
