The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes stated this Tuesday (19) that Brazil has overcome “dictatorial traps”. The statement came after the Federal Police indicted former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on suspicion of fraud in vaccination cards against Covid-19.
“When we go to other events abroad, we meet colleagues from other international Courts who are talking about the causes of the disasters they suffered… We tell them how we overcame dictatorial traps. The story is there for us to see, including in the news of recent days”, said the minister during an event promoted by the Esfera Brasil group.
Last week, minister Alexandre de Moraes released the statements given as part of Operation Tempus Veritatis, which investigates an alleged coup attempt to keep Bolsonaro in power.
Among the evidence that served as the basis for the operation is a video of a meeting on July 5, 2022, found on the computer of Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid. At the time, the former president questioned the fairness of the electoral system.
The minister stated that the video shows that “something very bad was going on” in the country. “I, as an observer, [posso dizer que] We have rarely had such significant advances. We went from speculation to evidence… I am amazed at the data that the Federal Police managed to obtain, in fact, they are very convincing that something very bad was underway”, Gilmar told the journalist after the event.
