Gasoline Porsche beats electric Porsche’s record – 07/25/2023 – Market

The electric Porsche Taycan made history by becoming the fastest car to pass the Folha-Mauá test. His reign, however, lasted only a year.

The German automaker remains in first place, but the position is now occupied by the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, a new record holder in the acceleration test. Instead of electricity, what powers this sports car is gasoline.

Although it is not a light car –it weighs 1,710 kilos–, its 650 hp 3.8 V6 boxer engine is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. This set guaranteed acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 2.7s. The Taycan needed a tenth of a second longer to complete the same test.

The new record holder is also luxurious. Those who use it only for open or closed top rides will be able, for example, to define where it is necessary to lift the suspension to enter garages or pass through streets with ditches.

It works like this: the driver selects the automatic lifting mode for a certain location, which will be recorded in the memory of the multimedia center. As you approach that stretch, the GPS navigation system will know it’s time to lift the front end of the car.

It’s features like this that turn the driving experience into something enjoyable – something rare in the super sports car segment, which tend to work well only on the racetrack.

The price, however, restricts the 911 Turbo S to a few customers in Brazil: R$ 1.85 million. Even so, 110 units of the model were sold in the country, including coupe and convertible options, like the model tested.

But there are other versions of the sport available — such as the Carrera GTS, which also passed the Folha-Mauá test.

Although it has less power than the Turbo S, this 480 hp 911 was the most economical in its category in the current edition of the ranking. On road trips, average gasoline consumption was 13.7 km/l.

The price is also lower. The Carrera GTS costs BRL 1.05 million, a difference of BRL 800 thousand in relation to the new record holder of Ranking Folha Mauá.

With the accelerated process of electrification, these fossil fuel powered Porsches tend to disappear from new vehicle shops. But the German automaker itself is working on a solution to keep existing cars in circulation: synthetic gasoline.

According to the company, this technology will be carbon neutral. Its refining uses gases that are already in the atmosphere, but the process is expensive. Inaugurated in December, a plant installed in Chile is currently operating on a small scale, but production will be accelerated throughout this decade, reducing costs.

HOW TESTS ARE DONE

To measure the performance of the cars, the Mauá Institute of Technology uses the V-Box, equipment that uses a GPS signal. The acceleration and resumption tests are carried out on the track owned by the company ZF, in Limeira (inland São Paulo).

The stage that verifies consumption in the city is 27 km long. To simulate a road trip at 90 km/h, the test drivers drive for 31 km.

Both routes are in São Caetano do Sul (ABC), where the institute’s headquarters are located. If the car is flex-fuel, two measurements are made: one with ethanol, the other with gasoline.

The consumption of electric models is measured using the charger installed in the IMT. The test calculates the cost to travel 100 km in urban and highway modes.
