Gabo Foundation opens submissions for journalism award – 02/13/2023 – Novo em Folha

The Gabo Foundation opened, this Tuesday (7), registrations for journalists to compete for the Gabo Award, the most important award in journalism in Latin America.

Professionals can only register stories originally published in Spanish or Portuguese between June 7, 2022 and March 21, 2023. Entries open until March 22.

When registering the work, the journalist must select one of the five categories chosen by the foundation: 1) text, for written reporting; 2) photography, for photographic coverage; 3) audio, for sound journalism; 4) image, for video reports, animation or other forms of digital visualization; 5) coverage, for works on news, research and current affairs published in any medium. The same work cannot be entered in more than one category.

Initially, the works will be analyzed by juries in pre-selection commissions. Those who pass the first screening will be evaluated by groups of at least three judges. These groups will be responsible for choosing the ten works to continue in the dispute, as well as the three finalists and the winner.

The juries will evaluate the narrative quality of the texts, the news value of the stories, the innovation or originality in the way of telling, in addition to the plurality of sources, the clarity of the report and the impact generated by the publication. The winners will be announced during the Gabo Festival, between June 30th and July 2nd, in Bogotá.

The finalists in the five categories will receive 8 million Colombian pesos (R$ 8,700). The winners will receive 35 million Colombian pesos (R$ 38 thousand), a diploma and a copy of the Gabriel sculpture, created by the Colombian artist Antonio Caro – a keyboard without letters, similar to the one used by the writer Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014) in the last years of his career.

“At a time when disinformation campaigns and denunciations against journalists contribute to the weakening of democracy in Latin America, the Foundation created by Gabriel García Márquez 28 years ago wants to claim the right to freedom of expression, as well as the right of access to information and contribute to the construction of an active citizenship”, wrote the foundation in the notice of the award.
