Funai employees are suspected of defrauding indigenous peoples’ pensions

Employees of the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) are being investigated by the police for defrauding indigenous peoples’ pensions. The Federal Police estimate that around R$ 64 million from Union coffers have been diverted.
The crimes allegedly occurred in the state of Mato Grosso, in the cities of Barra do Garças, Primavera do Leste, Poxoreu and Cuiabá.
According to the Federal Police, the fraud began with tampering with identification information, in particular the date of birth of the indigenous people. Thus, Funai officials would have issued Administrative Birth Records of Indigenous People (Rani) and Certificates of Rural Activity Exercise, with fraudulent dates to simulate that indigenous people would be old enough to retire.
In addition to Funai employees, notary publics, owners of bank correspondents and local indigenous leaders would be involved.
A People’s Gazette sought out Funai for clarification, but had not received a response as of the time this article was closed.
