Full STJD confirms banning of player involved in manipulation – News of Brazil

The plenary of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) confirmed this Thursday (22) the banning of soccer midfielder Marcos Vinicius Alves Barreira, known as Romário, for participating in a scheme of manipulation of results of soccer matches when he defended the New village.
In addition, the auditors decided to increase the fine imposed on the athlete from R$ 25,000 to R$ 80,000, in addition to asking FIFA (International Football Federation) for the decision to have an international scope. The punishment was based on article 242 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD), which provides condemnation to anyone who gives or promises undue advantage to any athlete to influence the result of the match or equivalent.
Another athlete who had the punishment imposed in the first instance confirmed by the plenary this Thursday was midfielder Gabriel Domingos. He remains suspended for 720 days, but the fine he received has also increased, from R$15,000 to R$80,000. His sentence is based on article 243 of the CBJD, which is “deliberately acting in a way that is harmful to the team he defends”.
The punishments were motivated by the participation of the two in a match-fixing scheme in the game between Vila Nova and Sport for the 2022 edition of Série B of the Brazilian Championship, which was played on November 6.
According to the allegations, which are the result of an operation by the Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO) called Maximum Penalty, Romário, who at the time was playing for Vila Nova, acted to try to co-opt athletes to commit penalties in the match in question. Gabriel, who also defended the Goiás team at the time, ended up involved in the case by stating, in exchange for messages with gamblers, that he would accept the proposal, which did not materialize in the end.
The MP-GO investigation emerged in February, based on a complaint made by the president of Vila Nova, Hugo Jorge Bravo. On that occasion, the leader revealed that Romário accepted R$ 150,000 to commit a penalty in the first stage of the game against Sport. Subsequently, in April, the MP-GO expanded the scope of the investigations, starting to investigate possible irregular events in Serie A and state championship matches.
