The Brazil-Hungary Parliamentary Front of the Chamber of Deputies released a statement of repudiation against the Brazilian government for having summoned the European country’s ambassador to Brazil, Miklós Halmai, to explain the stay of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in his diplomatic mission days after the Police federal government seized the former president’s passport.

The group’s president, federal deputy Alfredo Gaspar (União-AL), says he reaffirms respect and adherence to the principles established by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. “In accordance with this important convention, it is the prerogative of diplomatic representations to receive any person, without the need for accountability to the government of the host country”, indicates the note.

In the statement, the group says that Itamaraty’s recent statements and actions asking the Hungarian ambassador for explanations “do not align with the principles of respect for sovereignty and diplomatic autonomy.”

“Acts that question the autonomy of foreign diplomatic representations in our country can negatively affect bilateral relations, which are fundamental for development and cooperation between nations”, adds the front.

A report from The New York Times showed that the former president stayed at the Hungarian embassy in Brasília for two days. Four days earlier, the PF had seized Bolsonaro’s passport, as part of an investigation investigating a coup plot led by the former president to keep him in power despite the electoral defeat to Lula (PT).

Bolsonaro argues that he frequents embassies across the country, talks to ambassadors and maintains relationships with heads of state.
