Lula, if I were you, I would forget about Moro.

You already beat him. Moro threw away what was left of his dignity, reputation, professional respectability and the right not to be treated as a far-right militant when he supported Jair Bolsonaro in the second round. The support was an admission that his 2018 trial was skewed.

Moro had already denounced Bolsonaro as corrupt, he had already declared that there was more rigging in Jair’s government than in his, and even so he agreed to play Father Kelmon in the second round debate. There, he no longer needed Jair’s support to be elected senator. There, he already knew the horror that was the Bolsonaro government. He had already tried to be a third way candidate by denouncing these horrors.

Lula, nobody here in the media, in politics, in the business community, has gone through what you went through in recent years. Your story will be great written by Fernando Morais. Even so, there is a very good reason for you to abandon the past war: you won, but Brazil still hasn’t.

You won the presidency in spectacular fashion. He took office at a beautiful party. Defeated the January 8 coup. Stopped the Yanomami genocide. He began to recover Brazil’s international prestige. And the conditions are ripe for you to pass reforms that will inaugurate a new phase of Brazilian growth: the two tributaries, the fiscal rule, the probable change in secondary education.

But believe me: incredible as it may seem, no matter how bad it was, your life in jail after 2018 was not as bad as that of poor Brazilian women or Brazilians sick with Covid under the Bolsonaro government. You were elected so that the history of these people also has redemption, Lula, as yours did.

So forget about the war you’ve already won and focus on the war the Brazilian people are still losing: the fight to rebuild Brazil after this disaster.

Get used to the fact that a lot of people who were your enemies in the last war — the war that put you in jail — are on your side now. It’s not your first day of service in politics, is it?

Gather this political base that was formed against the coup, approve Haddad’s program and run to embrace it.
