Lula will have a domestic agenda this week

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who this Saturday canceled a trip to China because of pneumonia, should only have internal agendas over the next week. One of the topics that should enter the round of discussions is the fiscal framework, the set of measures aimed at containing public spending and preventing the explosion of public debt.
The Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, told “O Globo” that, with the cancellation of the trip, discussions on the new fiscal anchor could move forward. But he did not commit to a date for presenting the project. “I will not set a date.”
According to the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, the proposal has already been closed by the technical area and that new information will be provided to Lula in the coming days. “We are going to return to the president with the answers to the questions he asked”, said Haddad to “Folha de S. Paulo”.
The initial expectation was that the new fiscal rule, which replaces the spending cap, would be presented before the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) meeting, which met on the 21st and 22nd to discuss the Selic rate. The idea was that the announcement could facilitate the way for the Copom to commit to a drop in interest rates in the coming months.
Other topics may enter the president’s agenda throughout the week. One of them is a meeting with representatives of municipal authorities from all over the country who, between the 27th and 30th, will participate in the traditional “March of Mayors. To CNN, Padilha said that he will recommend that Lula not participate in the event. Vice President Geraldo Alckimin and ministers will be present at the mobilization.
It will also be able to address sectoral meetings with ministers and also discuss the imbroglio over the processing of provisional measures. The presidents of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), are at odds over the matter.
Lira sent a letter to Pacheco requesting the convening of a session of the National Congress so that deputies and senators can define the rite of processing the MPs. There are still 13 measures edited by former president Jair Bolsonaro to be voted on.
