German fans, protesting against a planned private investment in the Bundesliga (Germany’s professional football league), interrupted the game in several matches this Saturday (17), throwing tennis balls, chocolate and sweets onto the fields.
Fans across the country have been unhappy for months with the planned sale of a stake in the Bundesliga’s media rights company to an outside investor and have been holding protests for weeks.
In four of the five matches on Saturday, play was stopped because of protests, and referees for the clashes between Hoffenheim and Union Berlin and between Mainz 05 and Augsburg briefly sent the teams to the dressing rooms.
Play resumed at both stadiums, as did the match between Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund, which was repeatedly stopped to allow stadium staff to clear the pitch.
In December, Germany’s first and second division football clubs voted in favor of allowing a financial investor to acquire a stake in the media arm of the German Football League (DFL), in a deal valued at between €900 million and €1 billion. euros (between R$4.8 billion and R$5.3 billion).
