The fires, which have already reached historic levels for the month, make it difficult for riverside communities to breathe and survive

Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino said he had spoken with the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (União Brasil), this Thursday (12). The two dealt with fighting the serious fires that affect the state. Hot spots bring harm to health and have even interrupted the school year in Manaus.

This Wednesday (11), Manaus became the worst place in the world to breathe after smoke from the fires spread across the capital. Poor air quality was measured by the World Air Quality Index, a basis for monitoring the level of atmospheric pollution.

According to Greenpeace Brasil, the fires in the south of the state have generated a cloud of dense smoke in the capital of Amazonas. The greatest intensity of the fires is caused by the climate phenomenon El Ninõ, which warms the waters of the Pacific Ocean and worsens the drought in the North.

Information from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) indicates a new record for this month, which already has the highest historical average for fires in October. During the first 10 days, 2,684 hot spots were recorded. The municipalities with the most fires are Lábrea (344), Boca do Acre (263) and Novo Aripuanã (245).

Changed routine in Manaus

The drought crisis combined with the fires disrupts the routine of the population of Manaus, as the Amazon River is experiencing a historic low. Due to the inconvenience, the capital’s city hall brought forward the end of the school term for riverside schools.

The climate situation has other repercussions for communities dependent on the river, because they are no longer able to fish for food, use the river for transport and a means of distributing supplies.
