FIFA and Conmebol sign document for 2030 World Cup games – News of Brazil

FIFA presidents, Gianni Infantino, and Conmebol, Alejandro Dominguez, signed this Thursday (11) a document confirming that South America will host three games of the 2030 World Cup. Directors of the federations of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, countries that will host these matches, also signed the minutes.

The protocol act took place during the Conmebol Congress, held at the entity’s headquarters, in Luque, in the metropolitan region of Asunción, Paraguay.

In October 2023, Dominguez had already announced — and FIFA confirmed — that six countries will host games at the 2030 World Cup. Spain, Portugal and Morocco, which held a joint candidacy, will be the main hosts of the World Cup, but North America South will have the opening game, in Uruguay, and two more matches in the first round, one in Argentina and the other in Paraguay.

Inspections will still define details of the South American organization of these games, which will be official for the World Cup, but at the same time will celebrate the centenary of the competition, held for the first time in 1930, in Uruguay. The Centenário Stadium, in Montevideo, must be redesigned to host the opening match.

In Argentina, the favorite stadium to host is River Plate’s Monumental de Nuñez, in Buenos Aires, and the venue for the 1978 World Cup final. In Paraguay, Conmebol has a project to build its own stadium in a region close to Assumption.

The deal

Itatiaia found that the management of Conmebol made this agreement to have 2030 World Cup games in South America directly with the president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, after the leadership of the South American entity realized that it would lose the competition from the Argentina/Paraguay/Uruguay/Chile candidacy to that of Spain/Portugal/Morocco.

The Chileans ended up outside the final project of including South America in the competition and later received, as a consolation, the organization of the 2025 U20 World Cup.

Paraguay remained in the project because Conmebol wants to build a stadium for 45,000 people, but which can be expanded to 60,000 during World Cup games. The search for investment for the work is directly linked to the arena’s inclusion in the World Cup.

In 2026, the World Cup will be played for the first time in three countries, but on the same continent: the United States, Mexico and Canada. For the first time there will also be 48 participants, with 104 matches, and no longer 32 teams and 64 matches.

The 2030 World Cup will have this same format, with 12 groups of four teams, the first two and the eight best third parties advancing to a round of 32 stage, with knockouts from then on until the final. The champion, therefore, will have eight clashes, not seven.

The 2034 World Cup received only one candidacy, from Saudi Arabia, which will be named host in the future.
