Ferrari stolen from former driver Gerhard Berger is found almost 30 years later – 03/04/2024 – Sport

A Ferrari F512M stolen from former Austrian driver Gerhard Berger during the San Marino Grand Prix in 1995 was found almost 30 years later in London, British police announced this Monday (4).

In April 1995, the luxury cars of Berger and his teammate at the time, Frenchman Jean Alesi, were stolen in the Italian city of Imola, where the San Marino Grand Prix was being held.

Since then, there has been no trace of the red Ferrari, which has an approximate value of £350,000 (R$2.1 million).

But in January, the Italian brand contacted the London police after discovering that a Ferrati sold in 2023 was, in fact, a stolen car.

British investigators from a unit specializing in vehicle theft tried to trace the path followed by the car since the robbery.

The car arrived in the UK late last year and was recently purchased by an American.

After working in collaboration with investigators and car dealers abroad, British police concluded that it was the car that was stolen from Gerhard Berger almost 29 years ago and was sent shortly afterwards to Japan.

The red Ferrari is still on British soil and police managed to intercept it before it was sent to the United States.

The investigation is ongoing, but there have been no arrests yet.

In turn, Jean Alesi’s car remains unknown.

In 2023, investigators from this unit specializing in vehicle theft recovered 418 cars, with a total value of 31 million pounds (R$194 million).

Gerhard Berger, who is currently 64 years old, was a Formula 1 driver for 14 seasons, between 1984 and 1997.

The Austrian competed in 210 Grands Prix, with 10 victories, and twice finished in third place in the Drivers’ World Championship with Ferrari.
