Fehinti Balogun screens film about environmental racism in SP – 11/27/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

British actor, filmmaker and activist Fehinti Balogun arrives in São Paulo this week to promote the film “Can I Live?” (can I live?, in free translation), adaptation of a play of the same name that focuses on the theme of environmental racism.

The concept revolves around the climate issue and deals with the exposure of certain social groups to unhealthy environments with little infrastructure. In his film, Balogun addresses how the black population is most affected, in practice, by climate change and talks about the deepening of this crisis.

“For a long time, I haven’t heard anyone talk about the climate crisis in a way that makes sense to me and my experiences as a person of color, and I believe that excludes many of us from the conversation. Yet for many people, the climate crisis has already It’s a deadly situation”, says the filmmaker.

During his visit to the capital of São Paulo, Balogun will participate in exhibitions and debates about the work at Itaú Cultural, on the afternoon of this Monday (27), and at the Centro Cultural São Paulo, on Wednesday (29), as part of the festival of Association of Black Audiovisual Professionals (Apan).

On Tuesday (28), the Brit will go to the Peregum Black Reference Institute to meet with students from the Geledés multimedia course. On Thursday (30), he will return to the institution for a meeting with black audiovisual directors, in which he will address cinema and the racialization of climate issues.

Known for his performances in productions such as the film “Dune” and the series “I May Destroy You” (I can destroy you, in free translation), Balogun states that the theme of environmental racism became central to his career in 2018, when he made research for a theater job.

In an interview with the Café da Manhã podcast, from Sheetthe artist and activist said he feels an increasing openness to discussing the subject, even though he sees it as a great challenge to hold this debate by presenting feasible solutions — without them, in the British man’s view, people become disillusioned and apathetic.
