The Federal Economic Box (CEF) decision to charge a fee on payments made to legal entities by Pix took the government by surprise. Not even the team at the Ministry of Finance, to which the public bank is linked, was previously informed of the measure.

The decision to charge, although approved in 2022 by the financial institution, still in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and disclosed at the time on the CEF website, had not yet been implemented. The current board of the bank, already under Lula (PT), made the decision to start taxation from July.

The repercussion was bombastic, as it directly hits the pockets of small traders who receive payments for their sales through customer Pix — precisely the middle class that the PT wants so much to conquer.

U TURN

The bad repercussion of the measure led the Planalto Palace to order its suspension. The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, says that the final decision will be taken after Lula returns from his trip to Europe.

TURN AND A HALF

The possibility of taxing Pix, a means of payment widely used by the population, was already used by former President Jair Bolsonaro, the government’s biggest opponent, to pin Lula.

RIGHT POINT

In April, Bolsonaro released Pix transaction numbers in the country and wrote on his Twitter: “It is worth remembering that the current government does not rule out taxation of this medium offered”.
