The crowd of besiktas provided a beautiful image this Sunday, in the game against Antalyaspor, for the Turkish Championship. Thousands of toys were thrown onto the Vodafone Stadium lawn to be donated to children affected by the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria in early February. So far, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake has left more than 44,000 dead.

The match was interrupted at 4 minutes and 17 seconds so that the fans could throw toys on the field. The minutes refer to the time that the earthquake hit Turkey for the first time (4:17 am), on February 6th. The game ended 0-0.

“Our fans threw scarves, berets and stuffed toys onto the field at Vodafone Park to give as gifts to children in the earthquake region and cheer them up,” the club said in an official statement. “We express our best wishes to all our citizens affected by the earthquake that occurred in Malatya and which was felt in neighboring provinces.” The stadium was packed.

Among those killed in the tragedy in Turkey is the Ghanaian player Christian Atsu, 31, found under the rubble of the building where he lived. His body was found on the 17th. The athlete, who has already played for Chelsea and Newcastle, both in England, was on the Turkish team Hatayaspor.

In his Instagram, Danilo, from Juventus, paid his respects to Atsu, remembering the period in which both played together for Porto. The two athletes were teammates during the years 2012 and 2013. “You were an inspiration even without knowing it. I will tell my children that I played and met such a human being like you”, published the Brazilian.
