Brazil continues to increase the volume of grain exports in these first two months, but prices, even after a sharp drop in 2023, remain in decline.

This external decline affects part of exports of several Brazilian products, but facilitates imports of others.

Among the falls is corn. This month, the cereal exported by Brazil was traded with a 10% drop, compared to the value of the same month in 2023.

Live animals, whose sales resumed this year, exceeding those of February 2023 by 426%, are priced 36% lower, according to data from Secex (Foreign Trade Secretariat). Soy and coffee, two important items in the trade balance, fell 6.5% and 3.4%, respectively.

Secex data show that beef exports in the first fortnight of this month increased by 49% in volume, but prices fell by 6.5%. The same trend applies to chicken and pork.

The volume of chicken exported is 14% higher this month, but prices fall 7%. Sugar, which gained importance in the trade balance last year, continues to see an increase in volume and prices, due to lower supply from other competitors.

Rice, a scarce product on the international market, increased 26% compared to February 2023 values. This increase stimulated Brazilian exports, even in a period of high prices in the domestic market.

Among the declines, those in wheat and fertilizers alleviate the country’s bills, which depend on these products. With strong increases shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the two products accumulated a 26% drop compared to this year and last year.

Movement Wilson Sons recorded a rapid increase in services to ships transporting grain last year, through its maritime agency. With the acquisition of new clients and the expansion of Brazilian agribusiness, the agency showed a 66% increase in the number of calls served in this sector in 2023, compared to 2022.

…growing The incorporation of new customers also contributed to an increase in the participation of the grains segment, says the company, which served vessels with loads of soybeans, corn, wheat and malt. The scales attended indicated an increase of 76% in soybeans; 45% in corn, and 22% in wheat. In the case of malt, the increase was 147%.

Nestlé The company recorded organic growth of 7.2% last year. Animal feed products surpassed the 2022 movement by double digits, while coffee and children’s nutrition, with single digits, also had good evolution. Dairy products showed average growth, according to the company’s report.

Semen The Brazilian animal reproduction market sold 22.5 million doses of semen for beef and dairy farming in 2023, a drop of 2.8% compared to 2022.

Semen 2 The data comes from Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics), Esalq/USP, in partnership with Asbia (Brazilian Association of Artificial Insemination), which represents 98% of bovine semen sales.
