Professor Daniel Chaves demystifies the established idea that conflicts in the Middle East are of a religious nature. For him, at least for almost a hundred years, the widespread tension in the region is due to the interest in national liberation of some countries and the desire to free themselves from the European imperialist yoke.

“It’s hard to say who is right”said Daniel Chaves on the program ‘Togas and Becas’ (Diário FM 90.9)this Saturday morning, the 14th. He is a professor of contemporary history and a master and doctor in comparative history.

As for who is right in the Middle East, the expert clarified, for example, that today there is no war between Israel and Palestine, but rather a movement by the enemy of Fatah, a segment that truly seeks the national liberation of Palestine.

Daniel cites Hamas as the enemy of Fatah, pointing to it as a peripheral force with only 15% of Palestine’s population, but with 100% firepower, financed by Iran.

“So, this established idea that in the Middle East it is a holy war is artificial. Conflicts arise from existing political tensions. There is intervention of a radical political nature of all types and from all sides”described the teacher.

For Daniel, a radical practice among many that occur in the Middle East, was Hamas’ attack against Israel, sparking the conflict that has lasted a week, with thousands of deaths and injuries on both sides, including many innocent people.

“Hamas is wrong; goes against the Geneva Convention, against the international order which, if it does not have a Constitution, has some commonly shared codes”taught Daniel Chaves.

The professor indicated that the closest body to put an end to Hamas’ radical initiatives is the UN Security Council, which can also resolve the current situation in the Middle East, through diplomacy, or even using the power of force it has.
