The 80 students who make up the group improve techniques from the world of fighting every Saturday at the Vila Olímpica de Manaus

Manaus (AM) – The Government of Amazonas, through the State Secretariat for Sports and Leisure (Sedel), formed this March the first exclusive group for women of the Formando Champions Project, with students who participated in the Self-Defense Course. The pioneering initiative benefits 80 women, with classes on Saturdays.

“Our goal is to continue promoting quality of life for women through sport. One of Governor Wilson Lima’s public policies is to strengthen spaces for women throughout the state, especially in sports. The nucleus is made up of students who have already participated in the course and are on the path to sport”,

said Jorge Oliveira, secretary of Sedel.

The fixed classes are made up of students who have already participated in previous editions of the Women’s Self-Defense Course. The course will deepen and improve what these women have already learned, such as striking, using one’s body effectively to defend oneself, with techniques in jiu-jitsu, muay thai, Olympic wrestling and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

“As a mother, the course is essential for me, because now I have a better quality of life and more energy for my daily tasks. When I found out that the center was going to be in the Olympic Village, I was happy, as this is a reference space”, commented student Juliane Aguiar.

The Women’s Self-Defense Course reached more than 500 women in the capital and in the interior of the state. Launched in August 2023, the project has already had four editions, including an edition in Parintins (369 kilometers from Manaus) and another in partnership with the Federal University of Amazonas (UEA).
