Exchange in Tourism becomes a show of collective humiliation – 07/08/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

When the ties of Daniela Carneiro’s group with militiamen were revealed, the government held the minister in the chair. It was the first days of his mandate, and Lula did not want to test the moods of his base so soon.

It was clear that control of the Ministry of Tourism was a matter of raw pragmatism. Some political moves are like that, but they could dispense with the spectacle of collective humiliation staged afterwards.

No one emerges unscathed from the chaotic changing of the guard at the folder. Lula was left with the loss of having handed over the ministry to a group with limited political power to Belford Roxo. The barbering still gave the center the opportunity to exercise its blackmailing vocation and forced the petista to admit that, today, he is the weak side of the relationship.

Lula even managed to drag the politicians who sponsor the name of Bolsonarist (is there a former Bolsonarist?) Celso Sabino into the ministry. The president suspended the pressure from the centrão, postponed the replacement successive times and forced the group to accept each promissory note.

The “vai não vai” oscillated between mexican drama and slapstick comedy. In one of the several meetings in which the dismissal was sealed, the president and Daniela burst into tears — and she continued in office.

The buffoonery was carried out by Lula’s operators. After another meeting, on Thursday (6), Minister Paulo Pimenta said that Daniela was still in office. The centrão clashed and threatened tax reform. It took another two announcements to confirm the exchange.

The process also subjected Daniela to the embarrassment of wandering around as a ghost minister for almost three months. She circulated in public events as resigned, anticipated balances on the brief passage through the post and even received gestures of solidarity for the imminent fall.

In the final chapters of the soap opera, the government promised to build a hospital in Belford Roxo as a consolation prize for Daniela and said it would analyze the centrão’s appetite for other positions and big portfolios. The Ministry of Tourism turned into change.
