The two investigation actions that are being processed in the TRE-PR (Regional Electoral Court of Paraná) against Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR) are still in their initial stage – with the definition of which prosecution and defense witnesses will be heard.

Despite this, in Paraná, politicians have already put their “campaigns on the street”, with an eye on the possibility of a supplementary election to the Senate, in the event that the lawsuits against Moro generate the impeachment of the mandate of the former Lava Jato judge.

In the political environment, Moro’s impeachment is taken for granted and almost ten names are already circulating among possible candidates for the vacancy. “I have a clear project: I’m going to run for the vacancy of the current senator Moro. I’m campaigning, making political articulation. I’m going to participate in this process of the supplementary election”, admits the licensed federal deputy Ricardo Barros (PP-PR), secretary of Industry of the management Ratinho Junior (PSD) in the government of Paraná, and former leader of Bolsonaro (PL) in the Chamber.

“Moro’s case is identical to the case of Judge Selma. The court has the right to change its understanding, but the jurisprudence says that yes, he will be impeached”, says Barros, in reference to the case of Selma Arruda (Podemos-MT) , Judge Selma, whose mandate in the Senate was annulled by the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) in December 2019, for slush funds and abuse of economic power.

In addition to Barros, other names are eyeing the same vacancy, such as federal deputy Sérgio Souza (MDB). But the emedebista is more cautious when dealing with the subject. “It seems to me an unfair removal, but if there is even a dispute, I am interested in running for office,” he summarized.

Within the PT, there is even more than one name willing to participate in the virtual supplementary election, including the national president of the party, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann, who was once a senator for Paraná. Former senator and former governor of Paraná Roberto Requião and state deputy Requião Filho, who joined the PT last year, also made their names available, as well as federal deputy Zeca Dirceu.

The Panel also found that interest in the Senate also appears among politicians who are now pre-candidates for the mayoralty of Curitiba in 2024 – the case of state deputy Ney Leprevost (União Brasil), affiliated with the same party as Moro, and former federal deputy Paulo Martins (PL), who, last year, came second in the race for the Senate. In the eventual removal of Moro, Martins could take over the chair on an interim basis.

Another name that appears behind the scenes for a possible by-election is the former Lava Jato prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos), who recently had the mandate of Federal Deputy of Paraná revoked by the TSE. Allies believe that the condition of ineligibility pointed out by the TSE is not clear and that there would be a legal loophole for him to contest elections.
