The European Parliament approved this Tuesday (27) the Nature Restoration Law, created with the aim of repairing degraded ecosystems in the region. It is considered a fundamental piece in the European Union’s Green Pact.
In a plenary session, MEPs validated the agreement reached last November between legislators from the bloc’s 27 states for new legislation to prevent the deterioration of biodiversity.
The law imposes on the bloc’s countries the obligation to implement measures to restore at least 20% of their lands and 20% of their territorial waters by 2030.
The law was approved with 329 votes in favor and 275 against, after the largest party in Parliament, the right-wing European People’s Party (EPP), announced that it would vote against it, claiming solidarity with farmers protesting in several EU countries. .
Spanish socialist MEP César Luena, the project’s rapporteur, said the law’s approval represents “an important day for Europe, as we move from protecting and conserving nature to restoring it.”
The law “will also help meet many of our international commitments on environmental issues,” he added. “The regulations will restore degraded ecosystems while respecting the agricultural sector.”
The text will come into force as soon as it is formally adopted by the 27 countries in the bloc.
