Euducafro publishes list with indication of blacks to STF – 04/18/2023 – Panel

Educafro Brasil released a list with the names of 10 black people in the area of law who, according to the entity, meet the requirements to be nominated for a vacancy in the STF (Federal Supreme Court) by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
According to the institution’s executive director, Friar David Santos, this is a way to combat racism and contemplate Brazilian diversity.
Report by Sheet showed the growing movement of different sectors of society for the unprecedented appointment of a black minister to the STF.
The first vacancy was opened with the retirement of minister Ricardo Lewandowski. The second vacancy should open in October, with the retirement of Minister Rosa Weber.
Educafro’s list adds to this articulation due to the entry of black people into the highest court in the country.
“For the first time in the history of Brazil we saw more than one black person putting their name, disputing this vacancy in the STF. Now we have not one, not two, we have many black people, women, men, very ready, with master’s, doctorate, post-doctorate, ready to serve Brazil through the STF”, says Frei David.
Educafro’s note begins by thanking the STF and recognizing its history of combating racism and inequality, with several decisions in this regard, such as the issue of racial quotas in contests and elections, determining that political parties are committed to women’s candidacies and of Afro-Brazilians.
But he warns that the historical moment is crucial for changes.
“The STF needs to have a composition more similar to that of the Brazilian population, which will bring even more credibility, representativeness and authority, because Brazilians look at a Court that is not, by an enormous majority, only white and male”, brings an excerpt of the note.
According to Educafro, the questions submitted to the Court must be analyzed with different worldviews, which help to see more angles and in a more complete way, so that we understand that a diversified composition is crucial.
The institution states that it is important for society to see more black people in positions of power and that this greater representation is an essential step towards a true democracy.
Also according to Educafro, blacks make up 56.1% of the population, according to the 2010 IBGE, and only 12.8% of Brazilian judges.
“We have only one black minister in the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), which has 33 members. In the STF, we already had 170 ministers, of which only three were black. We cannot miss the opportunity of, having a popular government, having an Afro -Brazilian composing the Supreme Court”, he defines.
Friar David says he counts on Brazilian society.
“This list has the objective of already preparing Brazilian society to help us to help Brazil understand that, if this first wave does not happen now, in the second, in the third wave we want a woman and a black man. very firm 10 names to show that we have many women, many men, Afro-Brazilians ready to serve Brazil as ministers of the STF”, he concludes.
