The match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao was suspended this Sunday (10) after a fan died in the stands of the Nuevo Los Cármenes stadium, in Granada. According to the Spanish press, the victim is a man in his 70s, who had suffered a cardiac arrest.
People who were close to him in the stands were the first to ask for help, while on the field the referee stopped the game after being warned by Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón and the Granada bench. 18 minutes had been played, and the Bilbao team were winning 1-0.
The game was suspended for more than an hour while the man received medical attention. Doctors from both teams also helped. When the death was confirmed, the game was suspended.
“The game between Granada and Athletic Bilbao is suspended due to the sad death of a fan at the Nuevo los Cármenes Stadium,” LaLiga said in a statement on its social media.
The organizer of the Spanish Championship and the two clubs “have reached an agreement to suspend the match”, said Athletic, which expressed condolences to the family of the fan who died.
The same did LaLiga and Granada, which showed its “most sincere condolences to friends and family, as well as the entire Granada family” for the “death of a fan of our club”.
