Granada and Athletic Bilbao were playing a Spanish Championship football match
The game between Granada and Athletic Bilbao, valid for the 16th round of the Spanish Championship, was suspended 18 minutes into the first half, after the death of a fan in the stands. The game was interrupted when the fan suffered cardiorespiratory arrest.
“The game between Granada and Athletic Bilbao is suspended due to the sad death of a fan at the Nuevo los Cármenes Stadium,” LaLiga said in a statement on its social media.
During the match, Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simón realized what was happening and informed the referee, who stopped the match when the visitors were winning 1-0. An hour later, the game was suspended. According to a statement from LaLiga, the new date and time of the match will be announced in the future.
In a statement, Granada confirmed that the victim was a fan of the home team, paid tribute and sent condolences to family and friends. The identity and age of the fan were not disclosed.
