A network of entities active in the area of urban mobility released a manifesto criticizing the intention of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government to stimulate the automotive sector, through incentives for the popular car.

“The announcement is a setback for the current scenario, even more serious than the similar action taken after the 2008 crisis, as today society is forced to defend climate causes with efficient short, medium and long term actions”, says the Triple Zero Mobility Coalition document.

The group brings together entities such as Idec (Brazilian Institute for Consumer Protection), Inesc, Movimento Passe Livre, Tarifa Zero BH, Mobility Observatory of Salvador, (UCB) Union of Cyclists of Brazil, Rede Nossas, Casa Fluminense, Observatório dos Trens, ITDP (Institute of Transport and Development Policies) and Rosa Luxemburgo Foundation.

According to the group, “launching a package of actions to help the automobile industry will be a national setback from the perspective of sustainable urban mobility and the country will lose the chance to finally be a protagonist with the climate protection narrative”.

The incentive plan for the automobile sector is part of a larger program by Lula for the resumption of the industry as a whole.

The measures, to be announced next Friday (25th) at an event at Fiesp, will include credit lines for the manufacturing sector, tax reductions, an increase in the nationalization index of manufactured goods and a financing program for vehicles.
