Entities ask Lula for dialogue on the Democracy Package – 03/01/2023 – Panel

A group that gathers around 200 entities, the Pact for Democracy asked the federal government for civil society organizations to participate in the discussions of projects that substantially alter the functioning of institutions.

Letters were sent to the Ministries of Justice, Chief of Staff, Human Rights and Advocacia Geral União, among others, requesting participation in debates that modify instruments such as the Law for the Defense of the Democratic State of Law, the Civil Rights Framework for the Internet and the Anti-Terrorism Law .

The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has said that it intends to send the so-called “Democracy Package” to Congress shortly, a direct consequence of the January 8 attacks.

“The federal government signals for greater openness to dialogue, including with the social participation decree recently signed by the president. Therefore, we understand that a project that affects important legal instruments such as the Law for the Defense of the Democratic State of Law, the Marco Civil of the Internet and the Anti-Terrorism Law, in addition to proposing other legislative innovations, must be elaborated with the participation of specialized entities”, said Pedro Kelson, articulation coordinator of the Pact for Democracy.

Among the topics discussed are the creation of a National Guard to take care of government buildings in Brasília and changes in legislation to prevent the spread of misinformation and hate speech.
