Bois de Manaus perform Friday and Saturday at the Sambódromo

While the folk dances in the gold category of the 65th Folk Festival of Amazonas take place in the arena of the Povos da Amazônia Cultural Center, a number of entrepreneurs reinforce their income in the same space. The traditional event for valuing popular culture encourages the generation of jobs and income with the sale of products in the food court, handicraft fair and entertainment in the kids space.

The festival continues until this Wednesday (26), at the cultural center on Avenida Silves, in the Industrial District. On Friday and Saturday (28th and 29th), the oxen from Manaus face off at the Sambódromo.

In the food court, 40 typical food stalls cater to all tastes. The self-employed Ericka Carneiro, 29 years old, signs more than 30 June and regional recipes. She not only prepares, but also runs one of the biggest tents at the festival, in addition to employing at least six people. “It’s been very good, better than last year. We still have until Wednesday and we’ve already managed to make a good profit”, celebrates the self-employed, resident of the Japiim neighborhood, south zone. “Per night, we managed to sell around R$1,400, which is already very good”, adds Adriana.

In the area reserved for children, Dayane Costa, 37 years old, responsible for a company specializing in toys for events, also works in the segment, which, according to her, is profitable. “Here, there are seven pieces of toys and six other people work with me that I hired and paid for daily. I already took what I invested. On Saturdays, we receive an average of 300 children”, reveals Dayane, who has been working in the area of children’s entertainment for over 14 years and, for the second year, has participated in the folk festival of Amazonas.

The generation of employment and income takes place, in many cases, months before the festival takes place. In the sheds, the movement of the production chain ranges from hiring seamstresses, prop makers to musicians and bands that accompany the presentations.

For seamstress Arlete Batista, 65 years old, the years dedicated to the production of costumes by the Quadrilha Marupiaras do Amazonas have contributed to the realization of projects in the family. Before retiring, she says that the third shift of her work routine was dedicated to “cutting and sewing” the gang’s costumes. “It was definitely worth it. Everything helps, it helped with the education of my three daughters, all with higher education and independent. Now, retired, I can dedicate myself more and guarantee more financial reinforcement”, concludes the seamstress.
