Elita Nunes Melo Municipal School holds first chess tournament – News of Brazil

This Friday morning (22), the Elita Nunes Melo Municipal School held the institution’s first Chess Tournament. 44 students participated, at level 1 (1st and 2nd year) and level 2 (3rd, 4th and 5th year).
Kings, queens, rooks, pawns, knights, bishops are pieces of the famous recreational and dynamic table game for two players. The students were excited and eager to start the match. The game had six rounds that calculated points, chess players were randomly divided between the 1st and 5th grades, playing the six rounds.
Maria Clara, 11 years old, a 5th year student, participated in the Chess tournament, and spoke of the emotion of having won one of the six games. “I’m enjoying being part of this moment, I already played chess, I learned from my cousin, but the teacher taught me more”he said.
Silmara Gama, mother of Caio, a 2nd year student, was excited and hopeful about her son’s participation in the competition. “I have good expectations, but I understand that in addition to winning, my son needs to have fun”he said smiling.
The director of the Elita Nunes school, Alban Cordeiro, highlighted that the project was developed throughout the year, and today was the culmination. The selection of the 42 students took place through selection of those who stood out the most in Chess. Furthermore, the school manager highlighted the importance of educational practices through recreational games.
“The game of chess contributes to psychomotor, cognitive development, social interaction and respect among students”he said.
Sandro Costa, mathematics teacher and coordinator of the Chess project at the school, commented that the objective of the project is pedagogical, to help develop skills such as: concentration and reasoning.
“Chess helps to think and analyze, students respond impulsively, therefore, the game helps to concentrate actions”reports.
Furthermore, the project coordinator stressed that despite it being a competition, students need to be happy. The finalists in categories 1 and 2 received two large trays for first place, two medium trays and five more trays until seventh place.
Pedro Henrique, 11 years old, a 5th year student, was the champion in Level 2, winning five matches in the tournament. He commented that he didn’t play chess and learned from the teacher in classes focused on the sport.
