Education: Tarcísio Motta wants an agreement to contain Nikolas – 03/10/2024 – Mônica Bergamo

The arrival of federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) as president of the Education Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, harshly criticized by parliamentarians linked to the educational agenda, already mobilizes proposals for “damage reduction” for the period in which the Bolsonaro leader commands the collegiate.

Professor by training and one of the members of the commission, Tarcísio Motta (PSOL-RJ) says that the response to Nikolas’ appointment has to be institutional. The parliamentarian defends that his PL colleague commits to signing a procedural agreement for the progress of the work, as occurred in 2023.

The term could predict, for example, the speaking time of each deputy during sessions, establish advance notice before important issues are put up for voting and determine the frequency of reserved meetings between coordinators of each bench.

“Our first response has to be institutional, demanding commitments from him with the entire commission. Since the PL [responsável pela indicação de Nikolas] does not give up on an enemy of education, let him enter to fulfill his role in the presidency”, says Motta.

“What will happen if it won’t work [o acordo] is that we are going to make it impossible [os trabalhos] if the commission just becomes a stage for false controversies and the moral panic that the right wants to spread”, he continues.

As shown by SheetNikolas has never presented a proposal on education since arriving at the House last year.

There is a fear among parliamentarians involved with the topic that ideological discussions will hijack the commission’s activities and harm the analysis of important matters for the area. They also assess that the deputy’s lack of connection with the discussion about the challenges in the area could affect the debates.

The Education Commission is responsible for, in the regular process, considering bills on the subject, promoting debates and inviting experts and politicians — it is common for Education Ministers and directors of bodies linked to the department to provide clarifications.
