The Commission of Jurists responsible for the draft of the new Civil Code will present the proposal to senators this Wednesday (17). A thematic session designed to receive, present and debate the text is scheduled for 11 am. After the official delivery of the text, the proposal will be processed in the Federal Senate.

The commission of jurists was created by the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), in August 2023. Since then, the group made up of around 30 Brazilian jurists has held meetings, public hearings and discussions on changes to the Civil Code. The collegiate also received 280 suggestions from society. The update proposal includes topics related to digital law and family law, among other innovations.

For Pacheco, the Commission of Jurists “promoted true democratic debate” to adapt Brazilian legislation to “the social demands of the times in which we live”.

Despite the Senate president’s statement, reports produced by People’s Gazette, throughout the debates promoted by the Commission of Jurists, showed several controversies regarding the text. Topics such as abortion, attacks on the family and identity were part of the proposals presented by jurists and should form part of the proposal that will be processed in Congress.

Among the points presented, the changes pose risks to parental authority, subvert marriage laws and may enable legal recognition of “multispecies families”.
