Don’t hire anyone you can’t fire – 02/02/2024 – Ana Fontes

The truth is that everyone likes to inspire someone. Telling a story that ends with a happy ending fills us with pride. Sometimes, that story is possibly the motivation that a person listening to you needed to continue. But we need to talk about our mistakes and how they are decisive for your future or that of your business.

For the vast majority of entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship comes without an instruction manual, and you end up doing what you can within your reality at that moment. It was like that with me, and this is what I learned:

Don’t hire people you can’t fire

I hired family and friends who weren’t the right people (not that they weren’t good) for the company’s vacancies and needs. Disconnection, in this case, can be even more complicated and painful, as relationships become mixed.

Work what you love, and you won’t have to work again

At first, I dedicated myself to doing what I loved most, but I quickly discovered that owning a business is less about what you enjoy and more about what needs to be done.

Handshake only after a well-signed contract and with witnesses

Contracts and clauses are fundamental in a corporate relationship. These documents protect everyone involved, and that’s what they’re for: to ensure what was said in a conversation.

Value your time, knowledge and work. It’s important to create a portfolio and taking some actions for free can be an opportunity to be seen, but don’t let it become a habit. Learn to place value and price on your work without fear or guilt.

That doesn’t mean you can’t work with friends. In fact, I have hired and worked alongside friends and the workday has transformed colleagues into great friends. However, I reinforce the importance of considering all these points when hiring people for your team.

It is essential to seek out employees, partners, suppliers and service providers who are aligned with your cause and values. The rest of the required skills can be acquired through training and development. This approach will ensure that your journey is no more complicated than necessary and that your team shares the same vision and commitment.
