Already qualified for Paris 2024 at the World Championships in Antwerp (Belgium) at the beginning of the month, Diogo Soares shone again this Monday (23) with silver in the men’s artistic gymnastics all-around at the Pan American Games in Santiago (Chile). He scored 81.865 on the six devices (jump, floor, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and fixed bar). Gold went to Canadian Felix Dolci (82.531) and bronze went to North American Donnell Whittenburg (81.764).

The day was also special for Isabela Abreu, from Curitiba, who got her passport stamped towards Paris 2024 in the modern pentathlon. She finished the race in ninth place and secured one of the South American places in the Olympic Games.

Someone who also had a lot to celebrate was Felipe Simioni Neves, 34, from São Paulo, who won an unprecedented medal for Brazil in water skiing slalom (non-Olympic sport) at the Pan American Games. The athlete was bronze, behind only the North American Patrick Smith (gold) and the Dominican Robert Pigozzi (silver), both in the top 10 in the world.

“We have been fighting since Rio 2007, building a team, going abroad to train a lot and this has been an achievement of almost 20 years. I’m the only one on the podium who isn’t a professional, who has a job besides skiing. So, I’m very happy”celebrated the athlete from São Paulo, currently 48th in the world rankings.

Also this Monday (23) the women’s volleyball team, already qualified for the semifinals, maintained its unbeaten record in the competition. The alternative team led by coach Paulo Coco beat Puerto Rico by 3 sets to 0 (25/15, 25/22 and 25/21), in the last match of the group stage. Without losing a single set in the competition, Brazil ended the initial phase at the top of the group.

The highest scorer in the match was Sabrina, who scored 18 points. In addition to her, the team had Naiane, Maiara Basso, Helena, Lorena, Larissa and libero Lais on the court. Aline, Tainara and Luzia entered.
