The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, dismissed this Monday (14) the three federal road police officers accused of the death of Genivaldo de Jesus during an approach in Sergipe, in May 2022.

“We don’t want police to die in clashes or illegally kill people. We are working with states, civil society and corporations to support good practice and weed out those who break the law, improving safety for all.”

said the minister, in a note on social networks.

In May 2022, images posted on the internet showed the police action in which Genivaldo was locked in a smoky car on the BR-101, in the municipality of Umbaúba, in the south of Sergipe. The man struggled with his legs hanging out as a highway patrolman kept the trunk lid down, preventing him from getting out or breathing. Genilvado would have been stopped by the agents for riding a motorcycle without a helmet. According to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of the state, the victim died of acute insufficiency secondary to asphyxiation.

One year after Genivaldo’s death, the Federal Highway Police announced the Bodycams Strategic Project, which foresees the use of body cameras in agents’ uniforms starting in April 2024. About 6 thousand agents should use the equipment, approximately half of the force police officer. The practical tests begin in November, in the project coordinated by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
