The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, announced this Tuesday (17th), in a publication on Twitter, that he will set up the National Observatory on Violence against Journalists. According to the minister, the observatory’s proposal is to dialogue with the Judiciary “and other institutions of the justice and public security system”, he published.

The creation of the Observatory is an old request from unions of journalists who registered an increase in attacks on the press during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and takes place after a meeting between the minister and unions.

At the meeting, Dino also received documents with actions to promote the protection of life and integrity of communication professionals in Brazil. The action comes at a time of crisis for media professionals.

On the 8th of January, during Coup acts in Brasilia by radical Bolsonarists, there were 16 cases of aggression against journalists, according to a survey by the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji). During his mandate, Bolsonaro even denied the media and attacked professionals from opposition newspapers. Last year, the former president lost a lawsuit against a Folha de S. Paulo journalist for moral damages.
