Former president Dilma Rousseff (PT) says that the June 2013 demonstrations showed the left that it is necessary to understand and dialogue with the “anti-system” feeling that exists in society.

The analysis was carried out in an article published by her in the latest issue of Focus magazine, by the Perseu Abramo Foundation, linked to the PT.

Dilma was president during the demonstrations and says she is surprised by the size they acquired. According to her, the right had a false discourse against the system, but that ended up having the support of a large part of society.

“One of the great strategic challenges of the Brazilian left is to rebuild an anti-system perspective, of radicalizing democracy as a tool for sovereignty and social justice”, writes her, currently president of Banco dos Brics, headquartered in Shanghai, China.

According to the former president, “the anti-system spirit is widespread in our society: it would be an unforgivable mistake to let neo-fascism continue to take hold of this feeling, to manipulate it in a reactionary way”, she declares.

She also says that the demonstrations were not initiated by the right, but ended up being captured by it.

“The more conservative forces, counting on much superior means of communication, in addition to financial resources and international connections, were able to take a relative lead and exploit the mobilizations to throw them against the government, changing the original aspirations for a diffuse and manufactured speech against corruption,” he says.
