Federal deputy Duarte (PSB-MA) wants the Chamber of Deputies to approve a motion to repudiate the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), for having stated that the states of the Southeast and South of the country are different because there are more people working than living on emergency aid.

The parliamentarian presented a request on Saturday (3).

The episode took place on Friday (2), during the meeting of Cosud (South and Southeast Integration Consortium), in Belo Horizonte, in the presence of another five of the seven governors of the two regions.

“If there are states that can contribute for this country to succeed, I believe that these seven states are here. They are states where, unlike the vast majority, there is a much greater proportion of people working than living on emergency aid”, said Zema at the time. .

The statement was the target of criticism from oppositionists, who pointed out prejudiced content with other areas of the country.

“Your words [de Zema] offensives generalized and stigmatized an entire region of our country, hurting the dignity and respect of northeasterners and all Brazilians who value equality and harmony between regions”, says the request of deputy Duarte.

After the backlash, Zema said he was misunderstood. “Perhaps because I didn’t use the right words, I was misunderstood. People receive help because they don’t have a job. Help is important in times of a pandemic, recession,” said the governor of Minas Gerais.

On Saturday, he said that whoever analyzes his speech “will see that what I meant, and if I was misunderstood I apologize, is that we, governors of the South and Southeast, believe, are convinced, that the best social program is job creation”.

Senator Humberto Costa (PT-PE) took to social media to condemn the statement. “Respect the Northeast! Governor Romeu Zema made xenophobic statements attacking the North, Northeast and Midwest of Brazil. Phrases that I refuse to republish and that only attest to his prejudice, lack of preparation and irresponsibility”, he wrote.

“The guy hates poor people and still exudes prejudice. And worse, he does it with the authority of a governor. An unacceptable bad example”, said federal deputy Rogério Correia (PT-MG).

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro (PL), came out in defense of Zema. “Our idea is that everyone has the opportunity to develop and in a little while, who knows, maybe Brazil will no longer need aid. I think that was what Governor Zema wanted to talk about yesterday”, he defended.
