Deputy proposes making the teaching of the Tupi language mandatory in schools

Representative David Soares (União-SP) wants to make the teaching of the Tupi language and other native languages ​​mandatory in basic education schools. The parliamentarian is the author of Bill 273/24, which includes the requirement in the National Education Guidelines and Bases Law (LDB).

According to the parliamentarian, the Tupi language contributed to the country’s political unity and is a reference to Brazilian cultural identity.

“The education of our young people needs to be an object not just of academic training, but of pluralism and cultural updating. We cannot let topics that are part of our reality go unnoticed, as well as topics that are part of our history and that have had a powerful influence on our language. Relevant themes that should certainly be included in the Brazilian school curriculum, as well as several other themes that are understood as important and are embraced by schools”, said the deputy in justifying the proposal.

The project was filed on February 16, 2024 and reached the Commission for the Amazon and Original and Traditional Peoples (CPOVOS) on March 21.

After being considered at CPOVOS, the project will go to the Education committees; Finance and Taxation; and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship.

“In a few countries in America, an indigenous language was disseminated like Tupi, which contributed to the political unity of our country, which provided thousands of terms for the Portuguese language of Brazil and was the fundamental reference of all those who wanted to assert their identity culture of our country”, says another excerpt from the project’s justification.
