The purpose of the measure is to create a permanent debate in Parliament to find adequate solutions to this serious problem that affects tens of thousands of families throughout Brazil. “According to official statistics, in Brazil the incidence of this malformation is one case in every 650 live births. In the state of Amapá alone, there are now more than six thousand children with clefts”explains the author of the proposal.
As a reinforcement to his proposal, the parliamentarian uses the opinion of the plastic surgeon from Minas Gerais Giovana Brandao, which advocates the early treatment of this malformation. “Ideally, the child should start producing speech with the palate already operated on. Subsequently, speech therapy may be indicated if there is a delay in language development or for the correction of possible errors and hypernasality (whispery voice)”assures.
The deputy emphasizes the suffering that the fissure causes in the life of a baby with malformation. “In practice, this malformation causes the baby to have a crack in the upper part of the lips and in the roof of the mouth that ends up limiting the functions of sucking, breathing, eating and talking. It is very important that parents participate in the treatment”assures the doctor.
For Dr Drauzio Varela, “Cleft lip and palate, popularly known as Leporino Lip and Wolf’s Goat, are congenital malformations, of variable presentation, whether they occur during the development of the embryo”.
“The cleft lip, or cleft lip, always starts on the side of the upper lip, dividing it into two segments. Reach the gums, the upper jaw and reach the nose”.
Varela ensures that “In the cleft palate, the opening can reach the entire roof of the mouth and the base of the nose, establishing direct communication between one and the other. A bifid uvula may also be responsible (the uvula or throat bell appears divided). However, sometimes this variation in size is small, which generates some delay in the diagnosis”.
The causes of these anomalies are still unknown, and they can affect one or both sides of the orofacial region, occur alone or together, or be one of the components of a genetic syndrome. It is known, however, that the following risk factors may be involved in its manifestation: nutritional deficiencies and some maternal diseases during pregnancy, radiation, certain medications, alcohol, tobacco and heredity.
