The Minister of the Institutional Relations Secretariat, Alexandre Padilha, said this Wednesday (8) that there is “no discussion” in the federal government to change the law that gave autonomy to the Central Bank. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has criticized the BC and the president of the autarchy, Roberto Campos Neto.

“There is no discussion within the government of changing the current Central Bank law, any discussion of changing the autonomy that is established in the Central Bank law,” said the minister.

In 2021, Congress approved the law that establishes the autonomy of the Central Bank. The new standard was sanctioned by former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The law guarantees a four-year term for the president and directors of the institution, which does not coincide with the term of office of the President of the Republic.

Padilha was asked if the criticism of the Chief Executive could result in the early departure of Campos Neto. The minister stated that there is “no pressure on any mandate” and that “the law clearly establishes that you have mandates that will be fulfilled”.
