Already quoted among the pre-candidates, federal deputy Maria do Rosário (PT) officially made her name available to the party to run for mayor of Porto Alegre. The party already had the pre-candidacy of state deputy Sofia Cavedon.

Rosário ran for mayor of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul in 2008 when he lost in the second round to José Fogaça (MDB), who was seeking re-election.

She admits that she stayed away from disputes for the Executive because she “feared harming the party”, given that for years she was the favorite target of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for being a human rights activist.

“I went through a serious and pronounced period of attacks. But the storm passed and I survived. I think that in some way I helped and I think that all this strengthened me”, says the deputy.

Once chosen as a candidate, Rosário says she intends to set up a strong communication and legal structure against fake news involving her and her family.

“A structure that leaves no stone unturned in case it [ataques pessoais com fake news] happen. Today I am a person who lives on alert, but I have already suffered enough, “she says.

Against the discourse that her name would be too strongly rejected, Rosário argues that “she just cannot dialogue with those who are against democracy” and exemplifies by saying that she is the only woman and the only left-wing parliamentarian on the Board of Directors of the Chamber. She is second secretary at the Board chaired by Arthur Lira (PP).

The candidate chosen by the left-wing acronyms PT, PCdoB and PSOL, who until now maintain the discourse that there can only be one name in the dispute, will face the current mayor, Sebastião Melo (MDB), who has strengthened ties with Bolsonarism since 2020 and put together a coalition that can have up to 11 parties.

Despite aiming for debates around the city, Rosário admits that the 2024 election may have the air of a third round, of candidates representing Lula’s government project against pockets of resistance by Bolsonarism, which is experiencing a downturn.

When Bolsonaro became ineligible, Rosário posted a video waving goodbye to the former president on TV and saying: “Here we do it, here we pay. Great day!”

She was one of the first women to be insulted by the former president when he was a deputy. Bolsonaro said he just didn’t rape her because she didn’t deserve it.

“I think it will be, yes, another election to defeat Bolsonarism. But, for me, it always is. I have already defeated him in court and every time I am elected I defeat Bolsonaro”, he says.
