A group of state deputies headed by Guto Zacarias (União Brasil) and Danilo Balas (PL) obtained 37 signatures out of the 32 needed and filed a request for the installation of what they have called the MST CPI in the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, to investigate invasions of lands in the state.

The text of the CPI proposal says that under no circumstances is it possible to accept any invasion as lawful and that relativizing the right to property is inadmissible.

“It is evident that extortion, land invasions, dispossession, violence, damage, theft, in short, a multitude of crimes that impact properties, jeopardize economic undertakings, bring insecurity to Brazilians, need to be combated and it is up to this Legislative House to supervise the coming happening in our state of São Paulo”, says the text of the application.

The expectation now is that the president of Alesp, André do Prado (PL), will decide on the installation of the CPI among the more than 15 that were filed recently. The fact that Guto Zacarias is deputy leader of the government can count favorably.

In February, the National Fight Front promoted a day of invasions in the interior of São Paulo which it called the Red Carnival. In March, the Civil Police of São Paulo arrested its main leader, José Rainha.

Also in February, MST campers in Bahia occupied Suzano Papel e Celulose farms, in an action that had national repercussions and required the intermediation of the federal government to be resolved.

Parliamentarians from Tarcísio’s base say that the recent attention directed to the issue may lead to the state administration’s decision to prioritize a CPI that has rural movements as targets.
