Opposition federal deputies demanded this Wednesday (13) the end of the sentence progression, after learning that the kidnapper from the Rio de Janeiro bus station was previously convicted of robbing a bus in the Rebouças Tunnel in 2019 and benefited from the semi-open regime.

“This situation highlights the urgent need to review the laws on sentence progression and greater rigor in the application of justice”, said deputy Sergeant Portugal (Podemos-RJ).

Representative Silvia Waiãpi (PL-AP) expressed her indignation with the progression of the punishment regime, emphasizing that cases like this demonstrate the failure of the Brazilian penal system.

“We have to change the Law, which unfortunately colludes with the practice of crimes in Brazil, as well as an invitation to impunity. Criminals have a second chance, but the victim does not. Society needs to demand from its parliamentarians to change the Law, and save innocent lives,” he said.

For deputy Sergeant Gonçalves (PL-RN), the National Congress needs to “review sentence progression policies and ensure that violent criminals serve their sentences in full”.

“The safety of society must be a priority, and cases like this demonstrate the fragility of the criminal system in guaranteeing adequate punishment for serious crimes”, he stated.

In the opinion of deputy Coronel Telhada (PP-SP), the kidnapping in Rio de Janeiro “highlights the failure of the criminal system in guaranteeing justice for the victims”.

“It’s time to review our security policies and adopt more effective measures to combat crime,” said Telhada.

The review of the progression system was also defended by deputy Rodrigo Valadares (União-SE). “It is alarming to see dangerous criminals benefiting from more lenient sentencing regimes. We must reassess our criminal justice policies and ensure that violent criminals serve sentences commensurate with the severity of their offenses,” said the parliamentarian.
