Deforestation drops and, with it, the ‘disappointment’ with Lula – 7/9/2023 – Nelson de Sá

Even more than the labor reform, the reduction in deforestation in the first half of the week in Brazil echoed abroad at the end of the week.

In the headline of the American news agency Associated Press, in an extensive report, “In Lula’s first six months, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell 34%, reversing the trend under Bolsonaro”. Also by BBC and other Westerners, using the AP.

According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, “Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest has decreased by almost 34% compared to the previous year”. On the Ifeng (Fênix) news channel, with emphasis on Minister Marina Silva (below), “Brazilian government says deforestation is improving”.

In Libération and by other Frenchmen such as Le Monde, the disappointed coverage of Lula from two weeks ago changed to “In Brazil, deforestation has dropped dramatically since Lula’s arrival in power.” Libé heard, from the Brazilian Climate Observatory, that it is an effect of inspection and combat operations.

“In summary, we are prioritizing the application of the environmental law”, Ibama’s director of environmental protection, Jair Schmitt, told the AP. The agency notes that the data come a month before the summit scheduled for Belém, in Pará, with a view to articulating the actions of the Amazonian countries.

A preparatory meeting for the summit led Lula to meet over the weekend, in a Colombian city close to the border, with his colleague Gustavo Petro. Coverage in the country brought statements such as “Leticia, epicenter of the ‘great deal’ in the Amazon”, in Vanguardia, and “Petro and Lula da Silva: a summit for the future of the forest”, in El Tiempo.
